Switzerland / The coaching connection

Engelberg.

Big mountain character. A better understanding of your skiing.

Exploring Engelberg? For training here, my recommendation is Chris Oldaker. Get to know his coaching, choose your mountain and start planning your next step.

Find your Engelberg

More than the big-mountain reputation.

Engelberg has high-alpine skiing and gentler places to start. Match the mountain to the day and your group, rather than choosing terrain because it looks impressive on film.

TITLIS & Jochpass

The TITLIS area stretches from Engelberg at around 1,000 metres to a summit station above 3,000 metres. Trübsee and Jochpass add different terrain choices. Use the current piste map and open-lift information to plan what actually fits your day.

Brunni & first turns

The Brunni side offers a different setting, with Klostermatte by its valley station providing beginner terrain. For a first lesson or a mixed-ability family, ask Chris where to meet and which ticket you need before buying a full mountain pass.

The village base

Plan around your lesson meeting point, equipment collection and mountain access. Staying close to one lift does not put you beside every ski area. Confirm the day’s arrangements before booking accommodation or making a tight arrival-day plan.

Adam’s recommendation / Training in Engelberg

Get in touch with Chris.

If you want training in Engelberg, Chris Oldaker is my recommendation.

His approach puts understanding alongside doing: learning why a movement works, rather than chasing a perfect-looking turn without knowing what changed. His website welcomes everyone from first-time skiers to instructors working towards another qualification.

Chris lists a sports-coaching degree, Level 4 ski-instructor status with an ISIA Card, IASI examiner experience and membership of the 2019 Interski team. He also appears as Supreme Pro’s course director in Engelberg.

A conversation before booking helps establish your goals and whether the coaching fits. Send your dates, your experience and the part of your skiing you would most like to change.

Choose the right format

A lesson. A focused camp. Your next qualification.

Private coaching

Chris offers half-day and full-day private lessons, with the possibility of video analysis. This gives you space to work on a specific goal and revisit what you felt on the slope. Ask about the best duration and format for you.

Multi-day progression

His camp archive includes carving, moguls and all-mountain themes, using drills and video review. These show the type of training he has offered; the dated listings are not a current programme. Ask Chris which camps are running and how groups are matched.

Instructor development

Chris’s recent posts cover instructor courses, exams and Supreme Pro. If you are considering a first qualification or further development, explain your current level and goals. Confirm the course location, awarding body, prerequisites and dates directly.

Freeride week in Engelberg

Chris’s account of a Ski Club of Great Britain week brings together fresh snow, touring, learning and the group experience. A useful starting point for discussing a similar training week.

Progress, one step at a time

From a tour above Jochpass, Chris reflects on how small steps become meaningful progress. It gives a flavour of the patient approach behind the mountain photographs.

Make the most of the trip

Start with a goal, then build the week.

  1. Tell Chris what you want to change. Describe terrain you enjoy, what becomes difficult and whether you want confidence, carving, variable-snow skills or qualification preparation.
  2. Match the session to the group. Share everyone’s experience and expectations. Ask how different abilities will be accommodated before booking together.
  3. Confirm the full cost. Check coaching, lift passes, equipment, accommodation and travel separately, plus cancellation terms. Get current prices from Chris rather than relying on older posts.
  4. Agree the logistics. Confirm the mountain, meeting point, times and equipment. Check live lifts and weather before travelling.
  5. Leave room to practise. Ask what to work on between coached sessions and how to carry those ideas into your next trip.
Is Engelberg suitable for beginners?

There are dedicated beginner areas, including Klostermatte. Choose the lesson location with your instructor and check which lifts and tickets suit that plan.

Can Chris help with carving or instructor training?

His website and social channels cover both. Tell him your starting point so he can recommend the right private session, camp or training pathway.

What about freeride?

Chris’s Instagram includes Engelberg freeride weeks. Discuss experience, equipment and the appropriate professional support directly. Off-piste plans depend on conditions and terrain; a social-media clip is not a route or safety assessment.
